About the Chown family

The Chown family have been designing and manufacturing bone china ware of the very highest quality for over thirty years. 'Father' is John Chown who, instead of taking up an appointment as General Manager of Spode in 1973, left and set up from scratch Caverswall China in Stoke-on-Trent. In 1985 the Chown family sold Caverswall to World-renowned china & glass retailer Thos.Goode & Co. and John together with wife Heather and son Stewart (who by this time had become one of the most skilled ceramic printers in the British pottery industry) moved home to Cornwall to set up Chown China. Whilst still concentrating first and foremost on the design and production of bone china ware to the very highest standards, Chown China also now exploit Stewart's printing expertise by also producing a wide range of complementary  product such as Teatowels, Bookmarks, etc.. As practising Christians, you will not be surprised to find that we give particular concentration of product towards helping churches, charities, schools, etc., with such activities as Fundraising, Promotion and Outreach.

Image 2: Stewart taking a break from printing and gilding instead. Here he is gilding (brushing on by hand a suspension of the gold metal in an oily medium) the plates which we manufacture for Kew Palace. We supplied this batch in good time for the re-opening by HRH Prince Charles, and the private dinner party to celebrate Her Majesty's 80th birthday.
